Identity Crisis of the Irish Writers

Abstract

|
The Irish joys and sorrows regarding their identity confusion could be confirmed by various Irish writers. When we consider the beauty of Irish pastoral scenes and the nation’s hidden lamentable history, we are able to empathize with the paradoxical irony which many Irish writers expressed their antinomic situation. The originally simple and unsophisticated Irish peasantry had slowly developed a complex and distorted culture under a longstanding severe harsh colonization, and their psychic development can be compared to the Korean situation. Humiliating submission and rebellion toward injustice, hypersensitivity to inequality, betrayal and patriotism, quick-temperedness, sharp criticism with cynical satire and sarcastic humor, paradoxical duality and ambivalence, mother-orientedness, hyperemotional irrationality, a lack of unity and solidarity, and so on: all these elements are the common denominator linking Irish and Korean people. This paper studies the identity crisis and confusion issues revealed in a diversity of Irish writers. I focus on Swift, Wilde, Shaw, Joyce, Yeats, O’Connor and Beckett. They were the famous characteristic satirists with the stinging tongues, excepting Yeats. I think that the traditions they form in the Irish literature have been based on their hidden inner conflicts and outer painful situations, and their struggle to establish a stable psychic equilibrium.
